At peak operation the Census is looking to hire about 100 people in our local area and we have a long way to go yet.
For the 2020 Census, the government is hiring thousands of individuals from every community to assist in getting a complete and accurate count of everyone in the United States. These are temporary, full and part-time jobs as census takers, going out into the communities where they live to collect census data. There are also positions as office clerks and supervisors available.
For the first time, the United States is offering waivers for those individuals who receive income based Social Security benefits. Services that are receiving these waivers include SSI, SSDI, TANF, Section 8, Medicare, Medicaid and more. Individuals will have to claim any money earned from working with the census on their income tax, however, it will NOT be calculated in their benefits. The waiver should be requested when the individual is interviewed.
The decentennial census is a constitutional mandate to count everyone where they live in the United States every 10 years. Census Day is April 1, 2020. The data collected by the census determines the number of seats each state has in the US House of Representatives. It is also used to distribute billions in federal funds to local communities.
Each individual missed in Pennsylvania is estimated to cost the Commonwealth approximately $2,100. 2020 Census workers are an important part to getting everyone counted.
